Blue British Shorthairs were the first to enter the domestic market. I started raising and selling cats in 2014. Through my observations over the years, I’ve found some interesting points.
Why are blue British Shorthairs cheap now? First, let’s talk about the advantages of breeding blue British Shorthairs at that time. In pet breeding, British Shorthairs are a very reliable breed to breed. The reason is that British Shorthairs are actually more robust compared to other cats.
I remember when I was raising Persian cats, it was really a headache. Persian cats have difficulty giving birth, and many of them are not good at taking care of their kittens. Among the people I know who raise Persian cats, at least one – third of them have encountered problems in breeding.
Many hairless cats are prone to getting sick during breeding. Maybe most of them seem okay at first, but when you actually start raising them, you’ll realize how difficult they are to deal with. Without fur, they have requirements for the breeding environment, and they need to be cleaned frequently because their skin tends to get oily.
However, British Shorthairs are large – bodied, intelligent, and have good temperaments. Basically, from breeding to feeding, you don’t have to worry too much.

Now let’s talk about appearance. The prices of blue – and – white British Shorthairs and American Shorthair tabbies with white (also known as “American Shorthair with white pattern” or “American Shorthair tabby – and – white”) have never dropped. This is supported by probability. There are more cats with stable – gene and beautiful face – splitting patterns. But because there are also some cats with messy face – splitting patterns, the price of those with beautiful face – splitting patterns will never be low when selling. The price of a blue – and – white with a perfect “zhengba” (symmetrical white – face – splitting) pattern is around 2500 – 3000 yuan.
For golden shaded British Shorthairs, silver – tipped British Shorthairs, and let’s not mention Ragdolls for now. They have very high requirements for fur color and eye pigmentation.
For short – legged cats like Munchkins and Napoleons, there’s no need to say too much. The cost of borrowing a stud cat for mating and the survival rate are issues, so the price won’t drop in a short time.
For blue British Shorthairs, as long as both the male and female are blue British Shorthairs, the kittens born will all look the same. There are no strict appearance requirements. As long as the male cat is not extremely bad, even if the female cat is a bit thin, the kittens will look chubby when they leave the nest.
Coupled with their early entry into the market, basically, every cat – raising family has one or two blue British Shorthairs. As the saying goes, “rare things are precious”. Since blue British Shorthairs have gradually faded out of the market, no one wants to breed them anymore because the current price is only a few hundred to one thousand yuan. From mating, pregnancy to the kittens leaving the nest, it takes four months, and the total income is only two or three thousand yuan, and the time cost is high.
