A Fateful Encounter: How the Cat Chose Me

A Fateful Encounter: How the Cat Chose Me

It wasn’t me who chose it, but it who chose me.

On August 15, 2017, in Hangzhou, it was a dark, stormy night with lightning, thunder, and howling winds. I didn’t get home until past 11 p.m. and was completely soaked, like a drowned monkey. When I opened the door of the apartment unit, I heard a cat meowing from under a van at the entrance. I glanced over and saw two little “light bulbs” staring at me in the dim streetlight. So, I quickly went home to get a cat can to feed it.

The cat can was left over from when I took care of a friend’s cat on her behalf. When she came to pick up the cat later, she left a lot of cat supplies, saying she was too lazy to move them and left them for me in case I got a cat myself. At that time, I said I could barely feed myself, so there was no way I could afford to keep a cat. I was certain it was impossible. But as fate would have it, I hadn’t even disposed of the remaining box of cat litter, and here I was, having to face this situation.

Back to the story. After watching the cat finish the can and throwing the can into the trash, the little guy came up and rubbed against me on its own initiative. I was only half – wet before, but when it came out from under the car, well, it was as soaked as I was.

Well, I did half a good deed and one bad deed. I fed stray cats every day, but I’d never taken any of them home. Of course, I couldn’t break this “tradition” with this little one. So, I petted it, but after that, I thought it should leave. (Oh, men ️) At that time, I thought that in August in Hangzhou, even if it rained, it was still 30 degrees in the middle of the night. It wouldn’t get cold, but it might take some effort for the cat to lick its fur dry.

I was still too naive back then.

When I got home and checked my phone, I saw that the delivery guy was 583 meters away from me. So, I decided to get the takeout first and then take a shower. I changed into dry clothes and sat there happily waiting. When the delivery guy arrived, he told me, “Your cat is locked outside.” I stuck my head out and saw, damn, this guy had quietly followed me to the door?! It was really fate. I usually took the elevator, but that day, I suddenly wanted to take the stairs. After all, the seventh floor wasn’t that high, and I didn’t even notice that I was being followed by a fierce carnivorous feline.

So, what could I do? Since it was already here, I couldn’t just throw it back downstairs. So, I let it in.

After it entered the door, it was like it was back in its own home. It scratched on the cat – scratching board left by others, pooped in the cat litter box, and then started rubbing against me. I sat at the computer desk, my hands crossed under my nose, looking ahead, thinking about what the hell I should do. I felt like I was being “scammed”! Then this guy jumped onto my lap.

So, two wet bodies snuggled together. And in that split – second, 0.01 – second moment, I decided to keep it. So, it’s not without reason that people say cats can control human minds.
