My Journey with Socrates: The Cat Who Changed My Life

My Journey with Socrates: The Cat Who Changed My Life

In May of this year, I welcomed a special “little member” into my life – Socrates, a lovely cat. At that time, I was eager to have a cat of my own. In Shenzhen, I searched everywhere, only to find that the cats I liked were all priced above 2,500 yuan, which made me a little hesitant. By chance, I learned that cats could be bought at a relatively low price in Liaoning. When I saw the photo of Socrates, I was immediately attracted to it. Its cute appearance seemed to be waving at me. Despite the long distance between Liaoning and Shenzhen, I resolutely decided to go.

After some twists and turns, after I took a fancy to Socrates, I did not hesitate to start a journey across thousands of miles for it. From Liaoyang to Shenyang, and then from Shenyang to Shenzhen by plane, including all the driving time, it took a full 7 hours. I was full of anticipation to start a new chapter of life with it in our home in Shenzhen. The seller told me that Socrates was already 3 months old, but when I took it to the doctor, the doctor informed me that it was actually less than two months old. Looking at this small and pitiful creature, my heart tightened. It was so weak and had to go through such a long journey.

When Socrates first arrived home, it didn’t seem unfamiliar. On the first night, it held its tail upright and curiously patrolled around the house, as if exploring this place that was about to become its home. However, due to the stress response, it meowed loudly non – stop throughout the process. At that time, the cat food and other supporting items purchased from Liaoning had not been delivered yet. Looking at the tiny it, my heart was filled with pity. This little guy, in a strange environment, not only had to face hunger but also the fear of leaving the familiar environment.

But who would have thought that the challenges this little guy brought me had just begun. That night, I deeply experienced the difficulty of taking care of a young cat. As a person who was not married and had never taken care of small animals before, I observed a cat defecating up close for the first time in my life. What was worse, Socrates had diarrhea, and the situation was so serious that it directly sprayed out of the litter box, leaving the living room in a mess. At that moment, my heart was broken. Looking at the mess on the floor, I was at a loss. But looking at the pitiful Socrates, I knew I couldn’t back down and could only bite the bullet and clean up.

After that chaotic night, at 5 o’clock the next morning, in the repeated meows of Socrates, I actually started the strange experience of walking the cat at home. Wherever I went, it followed. Its small figure followed me closely, as if I was its only reliance in this world. At that moment, I suddenly realized that this little guy had unknowingly entered my life and become a part of it. Although it brought me many unexpected situations, it also made me grow a lot in just one day. It taught me patience, how to take care of others, and made me feel a sense of responsibility like never before. Since then, the story between me and Socrates has continued to be written in this small home, and every day is full of novelty and warmth.
