My family adopted a Border Collie named Michel, who is relatively pure and probably just an ordinary pet. The previous owner went to jail (harmony), and before leaving, he starved the dog for nearly a month. The dog actually survived by willpower, but the stomach and intestines also had great hidden dangers.
Later, he was adopted by an acquaintance pet store for a period of time, and came to my home shortly after he became an adult. It has been more than three months so far. Because of the epidemic, I have been together day and night. I observe Michel’s living habits and the dog’s own personality every day, and I have some experience.
The above is the premise. Let’s talk about my understanding of the hype of Border Collie:
When I first went to the pet store to pick him up, he didn’t seem strange at all. He quickly jumped into our car by himself and sat steadily. But after returning home, it still took some time for him to recognize his master. Specifically, he was not obedient enough, growled and whimpered to provoke us, and even hurt my father with his teeth once, but he didn’t bite me, otherwise the consequences would be serious…

After provoking him several times, I subdued him with brute force, and he never provoked again. He was basically like a normal domesticated Border Collie.
Then we didn’t use a cage at the beginning, so every morning when we woke up, we could see dog feces and dog urine everywhere… Later, after using a cage, plus walking the dog at a fixed point (early in the morning and evening), he basically didn’t urinate or defecate anywhere.
But occasionally, if you don’t have time to take him out, or if you do something that doesn’t meet his expectations, he will urinate in revenge. One time he was in a bad mood and peed a lot under the coffee table in my living room… Of course, the result was also terrible, and he never retaliated against us like this again…
In terms of training, when you have nothing, he completely depends on his mood to decide whether to obey, but when I lose my temper, he always obeys and does some basic movements obediently (I guess Michelle has done basic movement training, but it is not comprehensive, and he was not trained much in the pet store). When you have snacks, he doesn’t care about his face. Before the basic command is called out, he has already obeyed like a fake dog…
As time goes by, his obedience becomes higher and higher. He often circles around people, falls asleep beside you, or even sleeps directly next to you. He is also very clingy. When you come out to deal with him, he will use his long nose to push your hand, or directly turn his four legs up to signal you to touch his belly.
But he still has his own personality. It is mainly reflected in whether you are intimate with him, touch him, and give him enough attention. If not, it is basically another lonely Border Collie.
The above behavior can actually show that Michel’s intelligence is mainly reflected in “learning ability” and adaptability. He can quickly grasp the habits and personalities of his family members. He knows that I have a bad temper, so he always asks my father for help when he makes a mistake. Sometimes, seeing his mood, I am always afraid that he will speak human words…
Every morning when my father walks the dog, Michel will circle around my father. In the evening when I walk the dog, he will completely ignore my father and only circle around me. Secondly, it is mainly reflected in “cleverness”. My grandmother is very good to him. She always leaves some for him after dinner. Whenever he eats, he will only stare at my grandmother…
In addition, he will commit crimes without leaving any traces… Whenever there is food on the small coffee table in my kitchen, he will go around every now and then when he sees that no one is there. One time, a plate of meatballs disappeared inexplicably. We humans confirmed it again and again, and found that the perpetrator was Michel…
But now Michel is an important member of our family. He feels like a child who can’t speak.
Finally, to sum up, the Border Collie is indeed praised for its extraordinary qualities. Its IQ, learning ability and adaptability are indeed beyond expectations. Sometimes when you look at its eyes, you can also feel the presence of wisdom… However, it is not true that “Border Collies raise people” or “Border Collies are completely outsmarted by their IQ”…
At least ordinary Border Collies like Michel have not yet demonstrated “extraordinary IQ”. Many of their tricks and psychological activities are always seen through at a glance, and they are basically still controlled by people. But they can indeed reach the point where people understand them, and I feel that other types of dogs can also do this with more training.
Back to the point that Border Collies are the smartest dogs, and this is scientific data that I will not go into detail, but it does not mean that they are the best dogs. Their high IQ brings personality and low obedience, which will also make certain selections for their owners. Raising Border Collies really requires more patience, emotional communication and training. Only by being able to tolerate their small personalities and guide them through training can Border Collies truly become “suitable” for you.
