Wu Yi: The Scottish Fold Cat Who Conquered Our Hearts

Meet Wu Yi, a male Scottish Fold cat named after May Day (International Workers’ Day) because he joined our family right before the holiday. (I never thought to name him “Labor” instead…)

The moment I saw his baby photo (now a meme), I was smitten—those big eyes, soft meow, and silky fur! Though his bicolor face made him look like a little pirate, I couldn’t bear the thought of him suffering elsewhere. He quickly became the household prince, ranking even above me. Strangers always coo over his “bad boy” charm when we go out.

Early on, I was paranoid about his breed’s genetic health issues. Any tiny oddity sent me rushing him to the vet—props to my dad, who secretly used his savings to pay for checkups while I was away at college. Lucky for us, Wu Yi, now nearly two, is thriving!

As a kitten, he was a troublemaker. With a big house and yard, he’d vanish for hours. My dad would panic and search frantically, only to find him napping in some hidden corner. Once caught, he’d glare defiantly like a little delinquent (see photo).

At one year old, a stray kitten brother joined us. He’d sulk dramatically in front of my parents, demand cuddles after fights, and even fake a limp last winter just to worry us!

Over time, Wu Yi transformed from a sleek kitty into a chubby “mountain” (see “artistic” before/after shots). Despite his rotund figure, his charm remains unmatched.

The biggest surprise? My cat-averse mom now calls him “her little treasure,” ignoring me entirely. Wu Yi’s a true gentleman—calm, patient, and never aggressive. Special shoutout to my dad, who handles vet trips, grooming, and even refereeing cat fights!

Missing him every day.
