The Start of Raising My Cat, Diandian: A Story of Love and Responsibility

On November 17, 2016, it was the day when my boyfriend and I started to raise Diandian. At that time, he was only two months old, and he was a British Shorthair Blue and White Fold – eared male cat. (Key point: It is strongly recommended that everyone adopt pets instead of buying them! Fold – eared cats have a genetic history of osteochondrodysplasia. Please don’t raise fold – eared cats. If you do raise one and it gets sick, please don’t abandon it.)

We were still in college and hadn’t graduated yet. We walked into a pet store near the school. I, who had never been in contact with pets before, couldn’t resist these cute creatures at all. When we first met, it squatted quietly at the back. It didn’t have the enthusiasm of its brothers and sisters. But after looking at me for a long time, it timidly tried to reach its paw to the cage door, but was slapped down by its brother in front of it. I liked it very much, but my boyfriend asked me to think carefully, because raising a cat is not an easy thing.

In fact, I didn’t think deeply about what kind of things I would encounter after raising a cat. I just made up my mind on a whim. The next day, after getting the consent of my boyfriend’s family, we bought Diandian for 1500 yuan. (Key point: After reading my answer, you will find that raising a pet is really not an easy thing. If you have love, a sense of responsibility, and the ability to raise a pet, then you can raise one and promise to take care of it for its whole life. If you can’t do that, “raising” pets online is also a great option.)

Diandian spent the first night in my boyfriend’s dormitory. He and his roommate cleaned the dormitory thoroughly. I watched the whole process via video call. After the little guy got familiar with the environment, he started to drink water and eat cat food. (Key point: When it comes to a new environment, you must clean it thoroughly. Otherwise, the cat is very likely to get ringworm.)

Diandian was taken to my dormitory the next day. Because my boyfriend said that it wasn’t used to the new environment yet and didn’t know where to go to the toilet. So the first thing I did when I got to the dormitory was to teach it how to use the toilet: I took it to the cat litter box and pulled its paw to scratch the cat litter a few times. Diandian was very smart and understood immediately. In less than five minutes, it pooped as if to show its appreciation. To be honest, this was the first time I smelled something so stinky.

(Postscript: Because it used tofu cat litter in the pet store before, which can be directly flushed into the toilet, I was afraid that it wouldn’t get used to other types of cat litter, so I kept using this kind. Diandian can go to the cat litter box to pee or poop by itself. But every time I change its environment or the cat litter box, I still take it to the side of the box and scratch the litter to tell it that it should use the toilet here. When it grew up, Diandian, who likes to squat in the middle of the cat litter box when using the toilet, often got cat litter on its paws or rubbed against the edge of the cat litter box. So I bought an extra – large cat litter box on Taobao, which perfectly solved the problem.)

(Key point: Cat owners must shovel the poop and urine frequently. Some cats, when they see that the cat litter box is not clean, will hold it in and don’t want to use the toilet. Sometimes, to protest, they will even go to the bed to pee. Cat urine is very smelly and it’s hard to wash off. I’ve already thrown away a quilt ️.)
