Currently, there are roughly two factions regarding the evaluation standards of British Shorthair Blue and White cats in China:
One faction evaluates Blue and White cats according to the standards of pure blue British Shorthair cats. They believe that a good Blue and White cat should have the same body shape as a Blue cat.
Specifically, it refers to the standards of British Shorthair Blue cats, such as a short, thick, and round body, a round head with a large muzzle, small ears, thick limbs, and a short, thick tail, etc. This faction holds that the standards of Blue cats are the same as those of Blue and White cats. In general, it is: short, thick, and round, from the body shape to the facial features. And it emphasizes that it has nothing to do with the color division.
The other faction adheres to the standards that are often criticized and despised by many “breeders”: a pink nose, pink paws, a symmetrical “eight” shape on the face, a continuous white collar around the neck, and a non-patterned back. You can refer to the pictures above. This faction places great emphasis on the color division of the fur and the colors of the nose and paws.
Why are there such standards? Please compare the temperaments of Blue cats and Blue and White cats. Due to their gray fur and black noses and paws, Blue cats usually give people an impression of a melancholy and steady “uncle” temperament. While Blue and White cats, precisely because of their pink little noses and white collars, add a touch of freshness and sweetness to the round body shape of Blue cats! So this faction generally believes that sweetness is the significance of the existence of Blue and White cats!

Upon careful analysis, both factions have their own reasons. Currently, there is more information about British Shorthair Blue cats than Blue and White cats at home and abroad. The evaluation standards for Blue and White cats, including the standards of the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) for Blue and White cats, have always referred to the standards of Blue cats, that is, the standards of the first faction, where the color division is not important, and the physical characteristics are more crucial.
However, based on my long-term observation and thinking, the following are my views on selecting British Shorthair Blue and White cats as pets:
(The focus is on being a pet, not for breeding. The pictures are for reference only, and it’s not easy to find pictures of specimen-level purebred cats. If you don’t like it, please don’t spray!)
The appearance standards of Blue and White cats should be evaluated comprehensively considering both the color division and the body shape!
Based on the principle that [sweetness] is the top priority:
(Those who think that Blue and White cats don’t need to be sweet can leave now. The following views are meaningless to you.)
Why? Specifically, I think it should be considered from the perspective of customers:
First: A pink nose!
Generally, for those who choose Blue and White cats or those who didn’t know what this breed was but then fell in love with the appearance of these cats, most of them feel that they are “very sweet, fresh, and clean.” This first impression actually comes from the pink nose, white paws, or the fresh feeling of the white collar combined with the gray and white color scheme of Blue and White cats. You can compare the feelings of Blue and White cats and Blue cats.
(It’s not easy to find pictures, and I’m afraid of copyright infringement or disputes caused by the angle if I do find some.)
If you still think it’s not obvious, there is a more obvious way to compare, which is to observe and compare a Blue and White cat with a pink nose and a Blue and White cat with a black nose, and see how the pink nose improves the overall temperament:
I’d better find one. I searched it on Baidu. If there is any infringement, please let me know and I will delete it.
Do you feel the difference?
So I summarize the top priority for a sweet Blue and White cat:
A pink nose!
I emphasize the important thing three times.
One more thing to add. Why don’t I mention “five pinks”? Do you check every day whether the four paws are pink or patterned when they step on the ground? Whether the paws are pink or not is purely an additional factor. If they are not pink, patterned paws are also okay. If you are really obsessed with pink paws, you can emphasize it.
