In the feline kingdom of my home, there reigns a Siamese cat named Kela, whose demeanor and habits are as unique as they come. Unlike the typical, affectionate Siamese cats often depicted, Kela has carved out her own distinct niche, earning her the title of the “Kela the Great” in our household.
Kela’s most prominent trait is her penchant for laziness. Most of the time, she can be found in a state of complete repose, sprawled out on the floor or any soft surface she deems suitable. When she’s in a rare good mood and allows herself to be handled, one can scoop her up like a sack of potatoes. And astonishingly, when placed back in the same spot, she will remain in that exact position for hours on end, as if she were a living statue. Our veterinarian has confirmed that physically, she is perfectly healthy – her laziness is simply a part of her character.

However, when Kela is not indulging in her slumber or lazing about, she transforms into a different being. Her evenings follow a somewhat predictable pattern. After attending to her basic needs such as eating, drinking, and using the litter box, she spends three – quarters of the remaining time lying down, either asleep or engaged in some leisurely play. The other quarter of her active time is divided between grooming herself and her chubby American Shorthair sister. Kela takes on the role of the diligent groomer, ensuring that her sister’s fur is always in tip – top condition, while her sister seems more than happy to oblige, too lazy to groom herself.
Then, there’s the remaining eighth of her active time, during which Kela is a whirlwind of activity. First, she undertakes her “royal” duties of inspecting the house. If she spots a wrinkled bedsheet, she will not hesitate to use her paws to disrupt it, as if demanding that her human servant remake it. And woe betide if a light is left on in an unoccupied room – she will meow incessantly until someone comes to turn it off.
Next, the “battles” commence. In our multi – cat household, Kela is constantly engaged in skirmishes with her feline siblings. Sometimes it’s a one – on – one tussle, other times she teams up with one sister against the other, and on occasion, all three cats engage in a chaotic free – for – all. These battles are not just about physical combat but also involve a complex web of revenge and strategic maneuvers.
Finally, Kela doesn’t shy away from “educating” her human servants. She often fixes us with a piercing, “death stare” when we’ve done something that doesn’t meet her high standards. Her meows can range from gentle admonishments to full – blown tirades, as if she’s scolding us for our inadequacies. Her assertiveness is so strong that even when we take her to the veterinarian for routine vaccinations, the vet has sometimes expressed doubts about her breed, as her behavior is so far removed from the typical Siamese cat’s temperament.
Despite her quirks, Kela is an integral part of our family. Her unique personality adds a touch of unpredictability and charm to our daily lives. The photo of her with her straight paw has even been made into a phone case, a constant reminder of her indomitable spirit. And although she may not be the cuddly, obedient pet that some people expect, we wouldn’t have her any other way. She is, after all, the one and only Kela the Great.
