The Resilient Journey of Hanhan: From Illness to a Beloved Family Member

Our family never allowed pets like cats or dogs. Many of the pets we had, such as parrots and squirrels, passed away, leaving only a turtle to keep us company. The reasons for not keeping pets were, firstly, my parents found them troublesome and didn’t have the time. Secondly, I am a very sentimental person. The death of a small animal would sadden me for a long, long time, and my parents, seeing me so upset, didn’t want to endure that kind of heartache.

Let me tell you how Hanhan came to our home. My cousin originally had a big cat and bought Hanhan to keep it company. However, Hanhan fell ill due to the long journey and contracted feline panleukopenia. Thinking Hanhan wouldn’t make it, my cousin bought a new cat. Unexpectedly, Hanhan, with great fortune, survived (the survival rate of feline panleukopenia is really low). With three cats at home, it became too much to handle. Knowing how much I love animals, he asked if I wanted Hanhan. I did a lot of homework to persuade my family, and eventually, my parents accepted it.

This was when it was in the hospital, poor little thing.

My cousin said it didn’t eat or drink for many days. Because of work, he couldn’t visit every day. During the worst days, it had become so thin, just skin and bones. A day later, the doctor said it could stand and eat. The strong little one had made it through the toughest times. Thinking about the suffering it endured, I feel immense heartache and sadness.

Then my cousin took it home to care for it, occasionally sending me videos and photos to show its progress.

This was when it had just returned to my cousin’s home, its fur all puffed up, and its voice hoarse.

After about ten days, my cousin said it had recovered a lot, then took it for a vaccine shot. On April 5th, it came to our home!!!

Just arrived at our home~

When it first arrived, to avoid stress, we kept it in a cage, letting it get familiar with the environment quietly without disturbance.

Laying an old shirt for it.

Not sure what it saw, but it looked so surprised.

Head tilt.

A Tom cat.

Holding hands at night, not letting go.

When it first came, it had ringworm on two of its paws, oral ulcers, and ear mites. We tried applying medicine for the ringworm and fed it capsules for a few days. After it scratched my mom, we started putting the capsule contents into its food. The ringworm even spread to its tail, making it look like a sugar-coated haws stick for a while, with a section of its tail hairless…

Wearing the Elizabethan collar, it felt so down.

So down that it fell asleep.

Because the collar made eating and drinking inconvenient, and Hanhan didn’t like it, we bought a new one.

Then we bought it lots of toys~
