My Beloved Cat Mao Dou: A Journey of Healing and Companionship

My Beloved Cat Mao Dou: A Journey of Healing and Companionship

As a cat enthusiast who had dreamed of owning a cat four years ago but was unable to due to my parents’ disagreement, I finally brought my Mao Dou home at 5 PM on October 3, 2018.

The name “Mao Dou” was chosen by me four years prior. At that time, I wanted to name a cat Mao Dou and a dog Nani. Unfortunately, the person I shared the dream of having Nani with parted ways with me for various reasons, but thankfully, I fulfilled my wish to have Mao Dou.

Four years ago, when I first started writing songs, I already incorporated “Mao Dou” into my lyrics. Although uncertain if I’d ever own a cat, I poured all my fantasies about Mao Dou into the music. Later, my phone filled with photos of other people’s cats, which became avatars across my social media as I awaited my own feline companion.

Before bringing Mao Dou home, I contemplated countless possibilities. I had a year-long history of urticaria, with cats being my primary allergen, and I feared a relapse. What ultimately pushed me to act was my severe depression. Having interacted with many individuals with depression, I admitted to frequent bouts of it myself, but this time it spiraled beyond my control. After crying nightly for a week straight, I felt I needed a reason to keep living.

After a hectic National Day work period and frantically searching for a cat-friendly apartment, I brought little Mao Dou home.

The breeder described Mao Dou as a lively female with strong adaptability and good behavior.

In an impulsive decision, I also brought back a small blue cat, hoping for companionship. However, the blue cat bullied Mao Dou relentlessly—despite being half her size. Reluctantly, I returned the blue cat the next morning. 此后,Mao Dou became unusually clingy. When I opened the door, I’d hear her meowing eagerly inside.

Mao Dou is an extraordinarily well-behaved kitten. She never climbs recklessly, makes noise, or chews destructively. During play, she retracts her claws and gently pats my hand with her paw pads. She sleeps quietly under the bed or on the carpet beside me. True to my song, she loves sleeping on her back and having her head scratched. If I stop after a few strokes, she’ll nuzzle my hand persistently. Simple toys like a headphone cord, paper ball, or tissue bag entertain her for hours—sometimes she even wrestles with her own tail.

Mao Dou loves rolling on her back, flipping playfully as if begging for attention.

Napping on my guitar stand.

Wearing a startled expression.

With a gentle temperament, she entertains herself but meows at my bedside when she wants company. Despite being only two months old, she uses the litter box perfectly, never causing hygiene concerns.

Her stunning profile.

An elegant little princess.

Her tiny silhouette.

Undoubtedly, she has a chubby “baozi face.”

From now on, I’ll spoil Mao Dou endlessly.

Born on July 27th, Leo Mao Dou—so glad to have you in my life.
