This isn’t my own cat, but belongs to a close friend—a girl from my language institute. Because we’re so close, I often go to her place to play with her cat. By the way, my silver shaded cat was actually a gift from her.
This was the first time I met Lao Meng. He wasn’t familiar with me at all, so he refused to let me touch him. But when I actually tried to pet him, he only gave me a look of refusal without extending his little paw.
Then came summer vacation. I spent the entire summer in Beijing (and stayed at her place for a month). Since my class schedule was different from hers, I would return home earlier in the afternoon. From then on, I was in charge of Lao Meng’s water, food, and litter box duties. That’s when our relationship started to improve. Sometimes, he would even jump onto my bed and sleep with me ☺️.
He would jump into the laundry basket after I took all the clothes out to wash.
He would also flip his belly at me in a strange pose while I was using the bathroom.

Although he wasn’t thrilled about two new kittens suddenly joining the household, he still acted like a big brother and looked after them.
This was when he had stomach issues and was taken to the hospital for an ultrasound. They shaved the fur on his belly. Despite being in a bad mood and even slapping the nurse, he still didn’t extend his claws.
Sometimes, when I was about to wake up, he would walk across my stomach. A nine-pound cat stepping on me would instantly wake me up—just so I would pet him.
One night, I stayed up late, and he couldn’t hold on anymore, so he slept next to me. I rested my hand on him, and he immediately hugged it. My heart melted~
Lao Meng is an exceptionally well-behaved cat. Other cats usually wake up around 4 or 5 a.m. and start causing a ruckus to wake people up (like my cow cat and silver shaded cat, as well as the golden shaded cat in the picture—they all start causing trouble around 3 or 4 a.m., and by 7 a.m., when it’s time for humans to get up, they fall asleep).
But Lao Meng isn’t like that. He quietly waits for you to wake up. One day, because it was too hot, I stuck my leg out. Half-asleep, I felt something furry and suddenly woke up, realizing I had kicked him. But he didn’t react at all. If it were my grumpy cow cat, he would’ve flipped over and bitten my foot… Lao Meng is such a sweet and adorable cat.
This is the only decent photo I’ve managed to take of him without him resisting me, after all our battles of wits, haha.
Last week, he slept with me while wearing his cone.
Recently, Lao Meng has been having stomach issues and has to go to the hospital every day for IV fluids. He’s lost weight and has to wear the cone of shame. I urge all cat owners, especially those with male cats, to make sure your cats drink plenty of water! You must find ways to get them to drink more! Cystitis is so torturous for cats—it’s heartbreaking!!!
