Translation of a document from the world’s largest cat organization!
Preface:
What is a standard? It’s not a specific cat. The standard is an abstract aesthetic concept. The realization of a good standard will be as rare as art, a British Shorthair cat with artistic unity. Artistic unity requires that all parts be coordinated with each other, with balance and proportion among the parts, and that the parts promote and strengthen the whole together. A good work of art has its internal logic. Every detail has a sense of necessity and correctness. We aim for a standard, a visual form with a certain style. Style also means inner harmony and consistency among the parts. In the field of aesthetics, the whole is indeed greater than the sum of its parts, but each part can enhance or detract from the whole. Its realization should be aesthetic and artistic.

There is nothing grotesque, distorted, or ugly in the standard. Why do some winning cats look ugly or distorted? Because they violate the basic concept to some extent. A cat can have individual “good” features but may not reach the ideal of the standard.
In a poor or amateurish work of art, some parts may conflict or fail to coordinate with other parts. There are many bright spots accompanied by flaws. Weaknesses exist. The artistic unity is weakened or absent. If you analyze any cat that looks “ugly”, you’ll find certain features or combinations of features.
They don’t fit well or suddenly disrupt the basic overall pattern of lines and planes. In other words, something conflicts with the style.
Over – exaggerated, distorted, or contradictory parts will produce a grotesque rather than a pleasing image. Deliberately distorting and exaggerating features can also create a comical effect. This is the essence of cartoons or caricatures. However, the ideal standard doesn’t mean deliberately distorting any part at the expense of another. There is a delicate balance between enhancing the style and distorting it.
This standard doesn’t describe a living cat. It’s an artistic ideal that is never fully achieved. We’re just trying to approach the ideal, always aware that perfection is beyond our reach. This is the source of our inspiration, just as an artist is inspired.
