Well, I have a seven – year – old Bichon Frise at home.
Drawbacks of Bichon Frises:
[I]
Bichon Frises are companion dogs and are highly dependent on people. They suffer from separation anxiety. If you live alone and leave them at home without company when you go to work and come back, or if you often have to go on long – term business trips away from home, it’s better not to raise one. Over time, the Bichon Frise’s personality will change significantly. By the way, Bichon Frises show their emotions clearly on their faces. Take mine for example. Whenever he’s unhappy, no matter how you 逗他 (tease him), he won’t stick out his tongue and will give you a cold shoulder.
Just like this.
[II]
Bichon Frises are curly – haired dogs and hardly shed hair, but they need to be groomed frequently. It’s best to comb their hair with a pin brush every day. If not groomed for a long time, their fur will get knotted. My dog takes a bath about every eight to ten days, which costs 40 yuan, and gets a haircut about once a month, which costs 120 yuan.

Some people ask why I don’t bathe him at home. It’s not that I haven’t tried, nor is it because I have too much money to burn. Bathing a Bichon Frise is quite troublesome. They don’t cooperate, especially after the bath. You have to blow – dry their hair while combing it from head to tail. Without professional skills, it’s easy to hurt them or scald them with hot air. Then they’ll be very reluctant and show a grumpy face. After several attempts, I was really exhausted. So, I thought it’s better to spend some money to avoid the trouble.
[III]
White dogs get dirty easily, especially curly – haired ones. After a trip out, whether they get into the grass or on the beach, they often bring back all kinds of “gifts” from nature. Walking the dog on a rainy day is really a headache. When we get home, looking at their paws, it’s like they’re wearing boots. And my dog likes to put his face on the ground to smell. So, generally speaking, you need to have the psychological endurance to see your newly – washed dog get dirty suddenly.
[IV]
Once a Bichon Frise eats something too salty, it will have tear stains. The salt it can’t digest is all secreted from the corners of its eyes. Not only is it dirty, but it also stinks! If you really don’t pay attention and the tear ducts get blocked, it will cost money, and what’s more, unblocking the tear ducts is very painful for the dog.
So, the owner of a Bichon Frise must pay attention to feeding. The premise is that you must be able to resist its pleading eyes.
A Bichon Frise begging the owner for food may be smarter than you. The actions that it couldn’t learn no matter how you taught it before will all be mastered at that time. Give it a piece of fried chicken, and it seems like it can do calculus for you.
[V]
My Bichon Frise has weak legs. It’s not noticeable when he runs, but when he walks, his left hind leg will occasionally take a short step. The veterinarian said this is a genetic disease. It’s because the groove between the periosteum of the bones is too shallow, so it sometimes gets stuck when the leg moves. So, it has to take a short step occasionally, like manually shifting gears.
The only way to treat it is through surgery, to dig the groove that fits the bone deeper. For such a small dog, it may not survive the operation. Even if it does, it’s hard to say about the future. In short, after hearing the treatment plan, we thought it’s okay if he’s a bit lame. At worst, we’ll give more “bride price” in the future, like buying more dog cans for his “daughter – in – law”.
But I really don’t know the distribution probability of this lame – leg problem among Bichon Frises, so I just mention it.
[Summary]
It seems there are no other major drawbacks. I hope this is helpful to you.
