Thoughts on Raising Bichon Frises: A Veteran Pet – Owner’s Advice

As an experienced pet – owner who raises both dogs and cats, I sincerely advise friends who are afraid of trouble not to keep pets, not just Bichon Frises, but pets in general. Because once you have a pet, you need to take care of its eating, drinking, toileting, and sleeping, just like taking care of a child. It’s not true to say it’s not troublesome.

Bichon Frises are not the easiest breed to raise, especially for those who dislike trouble.

With its fluffy, chubby, and round white fur that looks like marshmallows, anyone who sees a Bichon Frise can’t help but exclaim how cute it is. It wins people’s hearts with its appearance, but maintaining such beauty requires a lot of hard work and money. You need to brush its fur every day. After a walk, you have to wipe its face and feet, or even wash its feet. It needs to be groomed every month. The moment its noble little feet touch the ground, they get dirty quickly. If it unfortunately develops tear stains, its appearance will deteriorate significantly. To maintain its beauty with less effort, it needs to wear dust – proof clothes and little shoes when going out. If you don’t want to visit the pet beauty salon frequently, you have to learn how to wash, cut, and blow – dry its fur yourself.

For me to wash, cut, and blow – dry my Bichon Frise, the daily necessities like the bathtub, bath towel, and hair dryer are essential. You can roughly calculate the basic expenses.

Bichon Frises are not the most intelligent dogs. However, I don’t think they have low obedience. At least, my Bichon Frise, Shiyue, is obedient, sensible, learns things quite fast, and has a strong sense of empathy. I’m often healed by her when I’m on the verge of breaking down. As an owner, you should at least spend time learning how to teach your dog to use the toilet in a fixed place and understand basic commands. This process tests both the owner’s patience and learning ability. Indeed, if you can’t teach your dog well, it’s likely that you haven’t learned how to teach properly. You need to reflect on yourself instead of blaming the dog for being stupid.

Shiyue learned to use the toilet in a fixed place on the second day she arrived home. Until now, every time she finishes using the toilet, she comes to find me. If she urinates, she asks me to wipe her bottom. If she defecates, she lets me deal with her feces. She’s as sensible as a child.

Just like humans, dogs also have different personalities. Generally speaking, compared with other dog breeds, Bichon Frises, as companion dogs, are relatively clingy. Some may even suffer from separation anxiety. My Shiyue doesn’t have separation anxiety, but as long as I’m at home, she mostly sticks to me and tries every means to get close to me. Whether it’s just going downstairs to take out the trash or after not seeing me for a few days, as soon as I open the door and enter, she acts as if we haven’t seen each other for ages, excitedly asking for a hug and then licking me as if she’s washing my face. This feeling of being eagerly awaited and warmly welcomed always touches me deeply. However, I think a dog’s personality is closely related to the owner’s. If the owner is emotionally stable and treats the dog gently, the dog will feel secure and also be gentle and stable. But if the owner is moody and treats the dog in extreme ways, the dog, living in a high – pressure and insecure environment for a long time, will become irritable and extreme.

I love my Shiyue, but I won’t persuade everyone to raise a Bichon Frise just because of my love for her. Objectively speaking, raising a dog requires a certain economic foundation and time spent together. Otherwise, neither the owner nor the dog will be happy. If you’re afraid of trouble, have a cleanliness obsession, or lack a strong sense of responsibility, I sincerely suggest you just enjoy dogs virtually.
