My Experience with Raising a Bichon Frise: Joys and Woes

My Experience with Raising a Bichon Frise: Joys and Woes

I had never raised any other dogs before. This year, I got a three – month – old Bichon Frise. When he first came, he was extremely small and incredibly cute.

Surprisingly, he didn’t grow much bigger than that.

This dog is rather timid. He seldom barks, so he doesn’t disturb the neighbors. He doesn’t bite people or fight with other dogs either. He’s curious about children and likes to play with other dogs. Before I get home every day, he’ll wait at the door and start barking when I open the door.

My puppy doesn’t like swimming. He’s even a bit afraid of water and doesn’t like taking baths either. But white dogs get dirty very easily. Potential Bichon Frise owners should take note that frequent bathing can be really troublesome.

My puppy even gets carsick. I wonder if other dog owners have encountered this. My puppy has been to many places with us. He’s been on a plane, by the sea, climbed mountains, and crossed rivers.

The advantages of a Bichon Frise are that it doesn’t shed much, has no body odor, and won’t destroy things at home (with its small size, its destructive power is limited even if it tries). However, he has a poor appetite and is picky about food (it seems that other Bichon Frises are said to be gluttonous?). His intelligence is also a concern. Catching a flying disc is out of the question, and he’s not very good at using a specific place to urinate. Eventually, we gave up on training him and instead placed pee – pads where he usually urinates.

He doesn’t have an over – abundance of energy. He often lies around and sleeps at home. But he really loves going out to play. I hope dog owners can spare some time to take him out for walks.

Our puppy seldom goes to the pet store for a haircut. It mainly depends on my wife’s skills. Anyway, I really like him.

He’s not overly clingy. When my wife is at home, they each do their own thing. But he’s more clingy to me, probably because I like taking him out to play. When we go out, he can be a bit wild. Only after I got tough with him and spanked him a few times did he become a bit more obedient. My wife can hardly get him to listen. But he doesn’t run too far. He’ll come back to check on you in a while to make sure you’re still around. When he runs towards you, his two ears bouncing up are just adorable.

The dog will also wait for me. Once, I drove to the company to handle some urgent business. I planned to finish it in about half an hour, so I took the dog with me. After I left, the dog waited for me like that all the time. He was so cute.

Raising such a puppy has added a lot of fun to our lives, but also brought some troubles.
