Hongdou: My Comical and Challenging Experience with a Golden Retriever

Hongdou: My Comical and Challenging Experience with a Golden Retriever

I had a golden retriever named Hongdou. The origin of its name is unknown. It weighs over 50 pounds now…

Cons: First, it eats like a horse. Who told me that only by eating dog food can its fur look good… So I fed it dog food. It smells quite nice, with all kinds of flavors. But this guy eats way too much… Some time ago during the epidemic, I didn’t go to work for seven months. I was living on instant noodles, steamed buns, and Lao Gan Ma chili sauce every day. Meanwhile, this dog still needed dog food mixed with chicken liver. It was so expensive…

Second, it sheds hair like crazy. It’s really outrageous.

Third, it’s stupid. Who said this breed is intelligent… It’s extremely dumb. If it didn’t look exactly like a golden retriever, I’d suspect it was a cross between a husky and a golden retriever.

Fourth, I don’t know if it’s affectionate. Mainly, I’m quite tough, so it probably didn’t have many chances to show its affection. Anyway, it does have a good temper. Its main form of “attack” is barking. It has no fighting ability. When we go for a walk, it would provoke a wild dog in the alley, not backing down at all. But when the other dog called for backup and several more dogs came out, it immediately got scared and hid behind me.

Fifth, it walks me instead. Since it’s a large – breed dog, it has to be on a leash. Every time we go out, I feel like it’s leading me. Until one time, I got determined. A friend asked me to go for a jog. So… we ended up “walking” each other. In the end, I just had sore muscles, but it was completely exhausted. I won one round.

Sixth, it was treated better than me in my family. My sister has never spent hundreds of yuan on snacks for me. But she would come to my house with big bags, and I thought… turns out they were all for the dog.

So I gave the dog away, to my sister. I think this guy was actually happy…

When I brought it back from my friend’s place, it was only one month old. It looked like a big rat, and I could hold it in my hand.

Then I made milk powder for it, goat milk powder with dried milk, and fine – grained dog food. And then… its eating capacity was off the charts…

I don’t have any photos of it when it grew up. I saw it every day, and I got tired of it. Anyway, it’s given away. This guy is really at ease at my sister’s place. Every time I see it, I feel like giving it a good beating… Indeed, it was cuter when it was a puppy.
