On the Intelligence of Cats: A Perspective from My Siamese Cat

My cat is a Siamese. But since all cats, especially Siamese cats, are generally considered to have a decent level of intelligence, there shouldn’t be much difference.

The reaction speed and sensory sensitivity of cats are probably top-notch. However, the intelligence quotient of cats definitely won’t exceed that of a three-year-old child. I make this judgment based on only one reason: they are extremely loyal to their feelings and desires.

On the Intelligence of Cats: A Perspective from My Siamese Cat

They have no concept of delayed gratification. When they see something delicious or fun, they must grab it at the first instinct. When they see a cat teaser or a bulge under a blanket, their first reaction is to pounce on it. They are animals completely filled with the fight-or-flight reflex. They will give a reaction result of staying and enjoying / pouncing and attacking / running away at the first moment. In other words, they basically have no ability or habit of reflection. They neither spend time being disappointed and regretful nor feel complacent because of being satisfied.

If a sticker gets stuck on a cat’s face, they will mistakenly think that it’s their position that causes the problem based on the most intuitive feeling and try to get rid of the sticker by backing up. They cuddle up to you because they have a good impression of you. If it’s for food, they will directly go for the food in your hand. I think many people mistakenly think that cuddling is a sign of being well-behaved, but it’s not. If a cat can directly get the food, it will definitely finish eating it first and then cuddle.

The place that can best reflect the intelligence of cats may have been overlooked by everyone. Cats have a strong ability to find their way. This “finding the way” doesn’t mean that cats can find their way home like homing pigeons. Cats have a strong ability to find footholds in three-dimensional space to reach their destination using vision. And this skill also serves the instant gratification of cats. Probably, this also takes up all of the cats’ intelligence.
