What are the 18 genetic diseases of poodles? (2)
2. Multiple drug sensitivity
Multiple drug sensitivity is a genetic disease that exists in many dog breeds. The drug sensitivity we are talking about here is ivermectin sensitivity caused by genetic defects. Among the drugs used for dogs, ivermectin is one of the best drugs for preventing and treating livestock and poultry parasitic diseases. The appropriate dose can cure the disease, but excessive doses will become poisonous and endanger the health of dogs, so there is a problem of safe dosage. Dogs with multidrug resistance gene problems are about 200 times more sensitive to certain drugs than dogs without this problem. Therefore, the normal dose of certain drugs is far beyond the body’s tolerance for dogs with multidrug resistance gene problems, causing poisoning or even death. Dogs with this genetic defect will not show symptoms if they are not injected or take related drugs, but once they take drugs, they will show symptoms of tremors, salivation, anorexia, epilepsy, blindness, coma and even death. Therefore, pets should be tested for multiple drug sensitivity as soon as possible.
3. Von Willebrand disease
Von Willebrand disease is a blood disease that affects the ability of blood to coagulate. Most dogs with the disease behave very normally in their daily lives. If they do not encounter blood draws, surgery or injuries, their owners will not know that their dogs have clotting problems.

What are the symptoms to judge that dogs have hemophilia? Dogs with von Willebrand disease may experience uncontrollable or persistent bleeding. This usually happens after surgery or when they are injured, but it can also occur spontaneously and for no reason from various body orifices. Symptoms include prolonged bleeding from wounds or surgical sites, spontaneous bleeding, and prolonged bleeding after delivery. Dogs with this disease do not require special care in their daily lives, but they should be cautious about anything involving blood. For example, any surgical incisions that need to be made should be as small as possible. If possible, laser or cautery should be given priority to reduce bleeding.
For any injections, blood draws, and administration of fluids, the needle and catheter specifications should be as small as possible. Keep the dog’s nails short to reduce the possibility of them being stuck or torn and bleeding. Always have hemostatic powder at home in case of emergencies. If the dog is bleeding, it needs to be stopped and sometimes blood loss needs to be replenished. This is done by using special clotting sponges or hemostatic powders, blood transfusions, and sometimes a drug called Micogen tablets, which can help dogs produce more von Willebrand factor in their blood.
4. Malignant hyperthermia
Malignant hyperthermia is a syndrome that occurs during general anesthesia. Once anesthetics or muscle relaxants are inhaled/injected, high fever, muscle rigidity, excessive breathing, tachycardia, etc. may quickly occur. If rescue is not timely, it may lead to death. Sick dogs usually do not have any abnormal symptoms. Only after exposure to volatile inhaled anesthetics during medical anesthesia will the body temperature continue to rise rapidly. With the increasing prevalence of sterilization and surgery, dogs must be anesthetized during surgery. Therefore, for many dogs, they not only face the risks of surgery, but also the risks brought by anesthetics. Therefore, it is recommended to screen your dog for this genetic disease as soon as possible, and remind the doctor to be prepared before accepting a treatment plan with anesthetics.
The main treatment method when the disease occurs is to inject the specific drug dantrolene (dantrolene is a specific drug for the treatment of malignant hyperthermia. The possible mechanism of treatment is to inhibit the release of calcium ions in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, play a role at the level of skeletal muscle excitation-contraction coupling, and relax skeletal muscles.) In addition, ice packs can be used to cool down and alcohol can be used to wipe the limbs to cool down. If rescue is timely in the early stage of the disease, the effect is usually better.
