2. The estrus problem

is not limited to male poodles. It should be said that all male dogs will go into estrus when they are half-adult, for example, seven or eight months old. After that, they will go into estrus regardless of time or occasion, and like to hug babies or people’s legs, etc.

As for the reputation of poodles, it is very likely that, firstly, there are too many people who raise poodles, and everyone knows about their complaints. I didn’t want to raise a poodle because of this reason; secondly, most small dogs are prone to temper tantrums, while medium and large dogs are more restrained.

Next, let’s talk about the estrus problem. When I first raised Xiao Tiantian, I bought her a boyfriend when she was about four or five months old. It was a reddish-brown poodle. Then, when I saw her facing the air for the first time, I was shocked. Only then did I truly experience the difference between male and female poodles in estrus.

When a female poodle is in heat, it lasts for about 15 days, and the bleeding period is 10 days. If you want to mate, you can do it on the 11th or 12th day. And the first heat cannot be mated because it is not mature yet. There are two heat periods a year, and you can’t bathe the dog, so you have to remember the interval between each heat period, and bathe it in advance next time. Xiao Tiantian will be in heat once every 5 months.

Male dogs will hug legs and dolls when they are in heat, etc. This is a behavioral problem, which can be taught. Once it happens, stop it immediately and it can be corrected. But when you encounter a female dog in heat, there is really nothing you can do.

Female dogs will bleed when they are in heat, twice a year, you can buy physiological pants, put urine pads in the nest, twice a year, in fact, it’s not bad. But female dogs will also hug legs and dolls, Xiao Tiantian did it before. It will hug its arms, and I stopped it immediately when I saw it, and it didn’t happen later, but I let it hug the doll, which is also one of its fun, so I won’t bother it.

3. Sterilization problem

Male dog sterilization surgery is super simple and can go home on the same day. Female dogs need to undergo cesarean section to remove the uterus and ovaries, and need infusion for about 7 days. This is exactly why I have not made up my mind to sterilize Xiao Tiantian. I think it is too torturous for the dog.

If I had a male dog, I would definitely take it for sterilization. It is true that after sterilization, there is no trouble with estrus, but it will gain weight because the mind is focused on eating.

Regarding the issue of sterilization, both male and female dogs have advantages and disadvantages. Take Xiao Tiantian for example. She has never given birth, and now she is more than 7 years old and has breast cancer. The pet doctor said that if sterilization is done before the first estrus, this disease can be greatly avoided. If it is not sterilized, it may also get uterine pyometra in the later stage. But these are all probability issues. There are also dogs that have been fine without sterilization.

In any case, the starting point is for the health of the dog.

Another point is that the body of a female poodle is softer than that of a male poodle, which is actually not a big problem. The most important aspects are body odor and estrus. If you cannot accept the bleeding of female poodles during estrus, then choose a male poodle. If you dislike the strong body odor of male poodles, then choose a female poodle.
